Our History
We came together with initial auditions in March 2019, where we received 51 interested applicants. We completed our first season with a performance in December 2019. In January 2020, we conducted a second round of auditions for new members to join our Spring 2020 season, which was supposed to run through June; however, the pandemic got in the way. In the fall of 2022, we came back together to prepare for a new season at the beginning of 2023 with a group of old and new members. We ended the spring season with a sold-out public showcase to 250 audience attendees in Oakland.
In our recent 2023 - 2024 season, 15 new members joined our choir, and after eight months of hard work through rehearsals and community building, we held a sold-out mask-required show at the historic Freight & Salvage stage in Berkeley, CA that seats 450 audience members.

The Queer Choir is an ensemble of queer, trans, and
gender-nonconforming singers.
The Queer Choir intentionally reimagines the traditional choral model as a healing practice, emphasizing inclusivity, disability justice, and community building. Joy is our success metric. Seeing queer and trans people feel joy, connection, and pride over the project is the impact we desire to make. We are here to celebrate the art, creativity, and magic of queer and trans people.

Accessibility
We aim to co-create a space accessible to our members to support everyone's participation and wellbeing. We are happy to announce that we now have a wheelchair accessible rehearsal space in the East Bay. We are COVID-conscious and committed to ADA-compliance and disability justice.
COVID Care Agreements
We sing in a well-ventilated space wearing N95-grade singing masks and have virtual rehearsal available for members who have been exposed or have symptoms. We follow The People’s CDC guidelines for safer in-person gatherings, please see below for more:
We run two large-area air purifiers, one at each end of the space (if you want/need to bring a personal air purifier for your own use, we support this practice!)
We require masking with N95-grade masks at all times inside the rehearsal (and performance) spaces.
Walk away from others before you take down your mask to drink water (best options are outside the rehearsal room
Suspending in-person rehearsals if the COVID case rate in Alameda County rises above or trends toward 100 per 100,000
Requiring full vaccination for members.
(from Peoples CDC) If you test positive, you should isolate yourself for a minimum of 10 days after your first positive result. After 10 days, use rapid tests to find out if you are negative.
Contact-tracing, by notifying the steering committee if you are ever COVID-positive and/or if you learn of a COVID exposure via shared air that might have impacted other QC members, so that this can be communicated to the group
